In May 2012 Wigan and Leigh People First were awarded money from the ‘Big Lottery Fund’ to run the ‘Speak Up Speak Out Project’.

The aim of the project is to support people with learning disabilities to develop their skills to speak up and speak out effectively as well as promoting a range of shared learning opportunities.

We also want to make sure that people have access to information about their rights so they can be involved in decision making about things that affect them.

Human Rights Workshops

Do you know about your human rights? We think it is important that you do. So we’ll be running workshops throughout the year to help people find out more about their rights and entitlements.

Speaking Up Workshops

We want to support you to speak up about the things that matter to you. We know that this can be hard to do. So that’s why we’re running some Speaking Up Workshops to help you learn more.

Leadership and Assertiveness

Do you know how to stand up for the things that matter to you? We think it is important that you do and that people listen to what you have to say. We’re running a 5 week course in April to support people to develop Leadership and Assertiveness.

Train The Trainer

It is important that people develop the skills to teach others about the things that they know. And to be able to share their own lived experiences in order to make others understand how things affect them. We will be running three lots of ‘Train the Trainer’ courses throughout the year.

Transition

We think it is important as you reach adulthood that you have control of your own life. We will be running two ‘Transition’ workshops in the summer that support people to plan for their own future. We also believe it to be important that you know all of your rights and are supported to develop the skills to speak up about the things that matter to you.
